My own health journey began over twenty years ago with studies in whole food nutrition from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. I’ve spent a lot of time, money and energy following my own self-directed educational path. I don’t regret any of it, but it’s easy to see from this vantage point, that without that early, solid foundation of holistic nutrition education, I wouldn’t be the coach I am today. It was, and still is an incredibly important piece of my overall health and self-care strategy.
So, naturally, I want to share it with you.
After close to twenty years of private practice, I’ve come to realize that my main job is to teach my clients the skills they need to take care of themselves. I realize that most people don’t want to spend the time and money to become holistic nutritionists, so I’ve decided to create a simplified, self-care version that will teach you the basics of what you need to know to take care of yourself and your family.
Now, I have to inform you that holistic nutrition is quite different from mainstream, medical establishment, university programs in nutrition. Sometimes these two camps actually say the exact opposite of one another.
I can’t think of another topic that’s as confusing as nutrition. Even the experts can’t agree! For example, the Heart and Stroke Foundation often recommends that heart patients consume more polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of soy, canola or corn oil, while your holistic nutritionist, naturopathic doctor or functional medicine doctor will probably tell you to avoid those oils and stick with grass-fed butter.
A dietician might recommend that you follow Health Canada’s Food Guide, while a holistic nutritionist will tell you that we probably shouldn’t be eating all those inflammatory grains.
One of my goals with this course is to help you understand the biases of science and medicine and how the influence of the food and agriculture industry shapes our food policy and even our educational system so you can evaluate new information with a solid understanding of where it’s coming from.
You’ll also learn
- about our bodies non-negotiable nutrient requirements and why it’s really hard to meet those with a vegan or even a vegetarian diet
- what a macro is, what micronutrients are and where to find the healthiest sources of them
- what biochemical individuality is and how to figure out your own unique nutrient requirements
- how to read labels and identify healthy and unhealthy ingredients
- what true food sustainability is and when and why to chose local vs. organic and vice versa
- where to buy healthy, local food in our region
- why most supplements are garbage and how to supplement wisely
- where to turn for unbiased interpretations of the ever evolving science of nutrition
A holistic nutrition education is not influenced in any way by industry. We haven’t received a cent of funding from the wheat board, the dairy board, GMO producers, Coca-Cola, Pepsi or agricultural chemical producers. Our curriculum is based on the premise that humans should eat food that goes bad, but eat it before it does, and looks at human nutrition through an evolutionary lens. If our ancestors ate it and thrived on it, it’s probably a good food for us.
If you’ve been confused, frustrated and don’t know if you should stop eating meat, eat more meat, eat only meat, eat more eggs, stop eating eggs, eat less processed foods, eat more plant-based proteins, supplement your diet with nutrients, avoid all supplements or anything of the sort, then this course is for you.
