We see fasting rituals or practices historically in most cultures for a variety of reasons.
Modern day researchers believe that fasting was a natural part of human evolution that acts as an internal healing mechanism that we have largely lost due to the land of plenty we now find ourselves in.
Fasting from food for short periods of time has many powerfully proven benefits including:
- allows the body to enter a state of internal cellular repair known as autophagy
- anti-aging and life extension
- balanced blood sugar levels
- breaking the addictive cycle of food
- triggering the innate repair mechanisms of entire organs and systems that ancient cultures have understood and used for milennia that we now know are related to stem-cell activation
- gives the digestive system a rest and allows for gut healing
- increased lean muscle mass and loss of body fat
- positive changes to the gut microbiome
- improvements in skin quality and glow
- improvements in mental focus and clarity
There are a number of ways to “fast” and over the past five years, it’s become an extremely trendy health intervention for people with a wide variety of goals, with a wide variety of protocols.
Complete fasting, meaning not consuming anything but water for a set period of time, has documented health benefits, but for most people those benefits do not outweigh the risks and the mental anguish of water-only fasting.
The more popular methods include intermittent fasting, “time-restricted feeding”, 24-hour fasts, juice fasts, one-day-per-week fasts and more.
Most health conscious people have tried one or more of these methods!
In the holistic health world, we’ve long used fasting as a healing intervention because it allows the systems involved in digestion to rest and the body naturally turns its attention to clean-up and repair.
You can think of it like a factory line that’s shut down for maintenance: you get rid of any damaged equipment, give everything a good cleaning and replace all the broken stuff.
That’s what seems to be happening with fasting as well, and now there’s a strong body of scientific literature that’s uncovering the mechanisms of that ancient healing wisdom that’s been woven throughout human history.
Most of the modern-day fasting protocols that I mentioned above are quite short, with a few exceptions, but the evidence shows us that longer periods of fasting are much more effective at triggering deep cellular repair and regeneration.
The trouble is, long periods of true “fasting” are very hard to do for most people and in some cases, aren’t safe.
Thankfully, researchers have discovered a way to “mimic” fasting by consuming very little protein and minimal calories for a period of five days, largely from plant foods.
This ‘fasting-mimicking diet” has a large body of clinical evidence to support its safety and effectiveness at stimulating our bodies natural internal healing mechanisms while minimizing the risks associated with more traditional fasting.
The impressive research on the fasting mimicking diet shows benefits for blood sugar control, fat loss, anti-aging, longer life span and disease prevention but one of the most important and life-changing effects in my opinion is that you’ll get your brain UNHIJACKED and you’ll experience what it’s like to be off the roller-coaster of food cravings. And believe it or not, it’s pretty EASY and kind of fun!
*We need to define the word “diet” here. Most people see/hear the word “diet” and automatically think it means “weight-loss diet”, but it does not. Typically when nutritionists say the word “diet” we’re simply referring to the foods you consume, as in “You should get plenty of high-quality protein in your diet”. The fasting-mimicking diet is not a weight-loss “diet”; it’s simply a short-term protocol of eating that has health advantages, fat loss being one of them.
Is a Fasting-Mimicking Diet Safe for You?
This protocol is safest for those that are generally healthy and not taking daily medications of any kind. If you take medication or have been diagnosed with any type of condition, it’s safest to talk to your health care provider before considering a fasting protocol.
While this plan has been successfully used to improve certain disease conditions, it is still considered experimental and cannot be recommended as a “treatment” for any condition. Speak with your health care professional, take them some materials about the benefits of the fasting-mimicking diet and ask them if it’s safe for you. Some pharmaceuticals might be impacted by any type of fasting program, so speak to the prescribing professional and your pharmacist to see if they think it’s safe and how to best proceed. For the duration of the five day plan you’ll be consuming about 800 calories per day with very little protein consumption.
My whole foods fasting version
I explored the commercially-available options for the fasting-mimicking diet with high hopes, but I was disappointed.
I’m a huge believer in eating the least-processed foods possible, and I think that’s even more important when the goal is to achieve a state of healing.
The fasting meal kit I used cost about $300 and there was no support of any kind with it.
The foods included packaged, processed bars and dehydrated soups that sent my blood sugar soaring!
By day two I abandoned much of the kit and felt I had no choice but to create my own whole foods fasting plan, both for myself and for my clients.
With over twenty years of education and experience in healing, whole foods diets, it was a do-able, but very time-consuming task.
I realized that most people would never be able to do this for themselves without a similar knowledge base and skill set, so I decided to run a group program to teach people about the benefits of fasting, help them learn how to cook and eat minimally processed whole foods and support them through the five day program. So, here it is!

This is a full 8 day program where you’ll have group and personal coaching from yours truly.
The beauty of this is that once you’ve done it, you’ll have the skills and knowledge and meal plans to repeat it anytime you wish! To get the most benefit from this program, it’s recommended that you repeat it 1-3 times per year.
This is a one and done to permanently shift your health and your life!
Day one Agenda: Information Day
You’ll get all the details well in advance, but we’ll go over the program and make sure it’s all clear and I’ll answer any questions you may have. This will be a 60-90 minute call.
Kitchen and Recipe Talk: What you’re going to need on hand to make the recipes, possible ingredient substitutions and detailed instructions.
Grocery and Pantry Talk: Doing inventory of your pantry and making a grocery list.
Day Two Agenda: Prep Day
Last minute questions, support and preparation for the fast!
PLUS: A full session on EFT Tapping and how to use it on hunger during the entire process!
Day Three-Day Six : THE FAST!
Each day we’ll meet on Zoom for 30 minutes to share experiences and I’ll be there to answer any questions you may have and lead you in some EFT Tapping!
Day Seven: Breaking the Fast!
This will be a 60-90 minute call where we’ll go over our experiences of day five and prepare for day six, the day we break the fast!
Day Eight: Wrap-up and moving forward after the fast.
This will be a 60-90 minute call where we’ll wrap up our fasting experiences, discuss what to do over the coming month to get the most out of the healing process your body has entered into and when or why you might consider fasting again in the future.
